Best electric golf push cart that follows you

I know the “best electric golf push cart that follows you” title is more than a mouthful and we struggled a little with the naming but if you managed to find your way here then it all worked out. For the rest of the way we will just call them “follow carts” meaning a golf cart that follows you around the golf course like a puppy that wants to play.

The first time I saw one on the golf course I was actually in awe. Me still carrying my bag for 36 holes a day and this gadget doing everything but serving up martini’s. I understand that the “follow cart” takes it a little far for some golfers be it in budget or automization but if you are here then there is a good chance that you are at least giving it some thought so we thought we could help you out a little.

Normally when we do our best of articles, we try to propose 5 options or so to give our readers a little wider perspective and choice. For the follow cart there just are not that many options on the market available that we feel correct in recommending. So instead we will take what we feel are the two market leaders and go from there.

We actually did not spend much time debating between our top two contenders for the top spot in our “Best electric golf push cart that follows you” rankings. It is not to say that both follow carts would not make you happy and the talk of your local golf club, it is just that we felt for what is ultimately the most important factors the CaddyTrek R2 grabbed the lead and never looked back.

To begin with, the motor. From our point of view if you are going to buy a golf cart to drive itself around then you want it to have the power to take care of itself and the R2 more than covers it. Two dual 250-watt motors combine for 500W of power which is approximately 30% more than our runner up.

Why is this so important? Because it directly translates into a dramatic increase in maximum load capacity for your bag and anything else you intend to carry on the follow cart. The CaddyTrek R2 has a maximum load capacity of 44 lbs. significantly outperforming its competition.

The next key factor in our decision was the standard package 24V Lithium-Ion battery which is rated for 27 holes of golf, another 50% improvement over our runner up. Both carts recharge times are similar but the R2 will keep you out on the course a little longer without worries.

When we turned our attention to the operability of the cart, we really appreciated how well the CaddyTrek R2 was able to handle the terrain. Rated for inclines of up to 25% and with its straight-line tracking supported by the addition of a gyroscope to the unit we were less concerned about mishaps.

We were not able to get a confirmation on the maximum inclines from the runner up but the guidance given is “for use on clear, relatively flat fairway” Both units range for follow mode are similar at 5.5 yards but the R2 comes also with marching functionality that keeps the cart in front of you keeping its distance in sight.

Lastly a couple of points we thought should not be left out. When we talk about portability the CaddyTrek R2 is in a league of its own. With its folded dimensions of 23 x 18 x 12 as compared to the competitions 12.56 x 25.98 x 32.3 it takes a little less than 50% of the total cubic inch capacity for transport. And price…. It is understood that the follow cart is not geared at the golfer trying to cut costs and it is a premium/luxury product but the R2 does generally come in at a RRSP that will save you some dollars

CaddyTrek R2s key selling points:

Tracking technology that follows you

Go hands free as the unit tracks in front or behind the player. Using a combination of Ultrasound and RF signal technology, the CaddyTrek calculates speed, distance and angle to the player. Golfers simply walk their game as the unit tracks the player’s movement.

The CaddyTrek provides two different tracking modes—Follow and Marching. The tracking technology is virtually the same, the only difference being the orientation of the player to the CaddyTrek. Stand in front of the unit and clip the handset to your back waistband and engage Follow Mode OR clip the handset to the front of your waistband and stand behind the unit to use Marching.

Use it as a remote control caddy

For additional speed and hill climbing ability, switch the CaddyTrek into Remote Mode and send it 100 feet to the next tee box.

Found in other higher-end electronic carts, the CaddyTrek uses an onboard gyroscope to insure straight-line tracking over uneven terrain. The CaddyTrek will make adjustments to return to its original line after encountering bumps, divots and uneven turf across the fairway.

Use the handset to send the cart around the green, navigate around bunkers or climb hills. In Remote Mode, the CaddyTrek’s speed, control, and stopping power are now in your hands.

Made for easy storage and transport

Total weight for the unit comes in at 39 pounds. Quickly remove the battery for even more weight savings. Fold the CaddyTrek down in a matter of seconds for easy transport in the trunk of your car to the club house or for storage at home.

Our Runner Up – Best electric golf push cart that follows you

Our runner up for the best electric golf push cart that follows you is Stewart Golf’s X9 Follow trolley. It may just be the best-looking runner up we may ever find on one of our lists. Stewart golf has been making these handmade trolleys (carts) in the UK soon to be two decades and the level of craftsmanship and style in our opinion is unmatched. This is attested to by the leading 2-year warranty that comes with the X9.

The X9 does not only look great (and it is award winning looks great by the way) but has some great performance features that we feel are still leading the way. It’s Bluetooth connectivity provides a secure and stable connection between the golfer and the cart and is not prone to interference that can be found at times in its competition.

If it is a race you are looking to win the X9 Follow is the right choice with its max speed on the fairway approximately 6 mph which is considerable faster that the R2. This is partly aided by the fact that the X9 is almost 2 lbs lighter of the two models. There are also a few standard features such as score card holders that are included not requiring an additional purchase.

But we will end this where we started it. For those of you who consider a follow cart a luxury item, for those of you who want to impress with a cart that oozes design, craftmanship and engineering there are few other items in a golf catalogue that could do more than the Stewart X9.

Stewart Golf X9 Follow’s key selling points:

Bluetooth Technology

The X9 Follow uses the very latest in Bluetooth technology, providing an extremely stable platform from which to send and receive signals from the trolley to the handset.

Each X9 Follow comes with a handset already ‘paired’ to one another, meaning that you only have to turn them both on and they will connect automatically. Once the connection is made, it remains connected for the duration of your round. This means that signals are sent continuously without interruption.

Downhill Braking

The X9 Follow will automatically apply a braking force if you slow your pace when going down a hill.

Integrated Stabiliser

The X Series chassis has been proven to be the most stable on the market after more than a decade of use since the original X1.

As well as a wide rear wheelbase and twin front wheels, the chassis also contains an integrated stabiliser. Should the X9 Follow tip backwards when travelling up hill, it will ‘bounce’ on the stabiliser until it makes it back on to all 4 wheels. If the ground is damp or wet, the rear wheels may lose traction and you may need to assist from the handle.
